Ispirato dagli sviluppi della crittografia e dalla narrativa poliziesca che stavano in quel periodo gradualmente emergendo, "Lo scarabeo d'oro" ha sicuramente ricevuto critiche discordanti da parte del pubblico. Acclamato sia come "geniale" che "spazzatura", l'influenza che il racconto ha avuto su lavori successivi non può certo essere trascurata, e sicuramente "L'isola del tesoro" di Robert Louis Stevenson può dimostrarlo. Inoltre, l'uso del cifrario nella storia ha portato alla ribalta l'interesse per gli enigmi e gli oggetti nascosti che sarebbero poi tornati in giochi da tavolo e videogiochi. -
