This charming work by Newbury Award winner Eleanor Estes portrays the daily lives of a widow and her four children in the fictitious town of Cranbury, Connecticut. The tales may seem to be from a more innocent time: one of the Moffat girls is scared to death of the police chief because she thinks she's been rude to him, the two boys hitch a ride on the train to the next town, the children enjoy the fun of Halloween pranks. The performances are splendid. A woman with a clear and winsome voice performs the narrative. The characters are performed by individual cast members every bit as winsomely and with great verve. M.T.F. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
