Her name is Elise Freeman, and her chilling cry for help—to whoever may be listening—comes too late to save her. On a DVD found near her lifeless body, the emotionally and physically battered woman chronicles a year-and-a-half-long ordeal of monstrous abuse at the hands of three sadistic tormentors. But even more shocking than the lurid details is the revelation that the offenders, like their victim, are teachers at one of L.A.’s most prestigious prep schools. With Elise now dead by uncertain means, homicide detective Milo Sturgis is assigned to probe the hallowed halls of Windsor Prep Academy. And if ever he could use Dr. Alex Delaware’s psychological prowess, it’s now.
From the get-go, this case promises to be an uphill climb for truth and a down and dirty fight for justice. Allegations of rape, assault, and possibly murder at this esteemed institution renowned for molding Ivy Leaguers make for a social and political time bomb—especially given that one of the students has connections high up in City Hall. As the scandal-conscious elite of L.A. close ranks around Windsor Prep, Alex and Milo must penetrate the citadel of wealth and scholarship to expose the hidden anguish, dirty secrets, and deadly sins festering among society’s manor-born. But power and position are not easily surrendered, for that’s when the best and the brightest turn brutal and ugly. Searching for predators among the privileged, Alex and Milo may well be walking into a highly polished death trap.

Elise Freeman tutors at Windsor Prep, an exclusive academy for children of the rich and famous. When her body is found in a bathtub filled with dry ice, along with a DVD she made accusing several colleagues of sexual harassment, LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis and psychologist Alex Delaware start asking questions. John Rubinstein expertly performs Jonathan Kellerman's 25th book in the Delaware/Sturgis series. From a sleazy, self-satisfied professor to an air-headed surfer dude, Rubinstein defines each character with truthfulness. Waitresses sound as if their feet hurt, and bartenders sound world-weary. Rubinstein never misses the warmth and camaraderie between Delaware and Sturgis or the dark humor that pops up in the intriguing mystery. Kellerman provides the words, Rubinstein provides the voices, and the combination is unbeatable. S.J.H. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine -

Deputy Chief Weinberg assigns LAPD Lt. Milo Sturgis a particularly sensitive murder case at the outset of bestseller Kellerman’s smooth if routine 25th Alex Delaware novel (after Evidence
). Elise Freeman, a teacher and tutor at exclusive Windsor Preparatory Academy in Brentwood, is found dead in her Studio City apartment in a bathtub full of dry ice. Despite Elise’s having left a DVD accusing three fellow teachers at the academy of repeated sexual harassment, Weinberg wants (for personal reasons) the investigation to involve the school as little as possible. As usual, psychologist Alex Delaware takes an active role in the investigation, which finds the victim had lots to hide. A boyfriend, students, teachers, and administrators are all anxious to keep those secrets hidden—and at least one of them is willing to kill again. Milo and Alex form an odd but effective duo as they trade banter and insights while sorting out the lies and deceptions. -

Lochlan Harriot is stunned when his beloved wife is convicted of murder, and he launches a desperate search to find evidence of her innocence. Susie Harriot had been a court-appointed psychologist for a serial killer before he was found dead. As Lochlan gradually comprehends the complexity of his wife's connection with the murdered criminal, he begins to question his own relationship with Susie. Narrator Richard Matthews provides rich personalities for this provocative, dark mystery. Through Matthews's capable voice, we experience Lochlan as pitiful and deplorable, yet somehow compelling. Women's voices are also presented plausibly, and the Scottish and British accents add credibility. N.M.C. (c) AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine
