Something is not right in the North Maine Woods.
A small family-run lumber company should not have more than two hundred million unaccountable dollars on their books. Money like that comes from moving something other than wood across the border.
The first agent the FBI sent undercover was their best man—sure to get the answers that were needed. He was dead within a month.
Now, Danny Barrett is taking his place. Before he was a cop, Danny grew up in the woods of Northern Michigan. He is the only chance the feds have of getting answers, but how many more will have to die first?

The former Detroit beat cop who narrates this pulse-pounding series launch from Edgar finalist Corbett (the Frank Yakabuski novels) assumes the alias Danny Barrett for his latest undercover assignment. The FBI has its sights on Lee Forestry Products, one of the “oldest lumber companies in Maine,” after learning of a suspicious wire transfer into the company’s bank account from a known ecstasy dealer. A transfer of a quarter of a billion dollars the FBI subsequently identifies suggests the company is laundering money on a massive scale. After its first covert agent trying to infiltrate Lee Forestry’s operations is killed, the FBI taps Barrett to replace him. Barrett poses as a tree marker, whose job is to decide the best trees to cut down. The perilous assignment turns into a murder inquiry after a double homicide occurs. From the opening line, “The first time I worked undercover, I arrested my brother,” Corbett makes Barrett a distinctive figure, nuanced enough to carry multiple sequels, and goes on to humanize even some of the bad guys, no mean feat. Vivid and detailed descriptions of the Maine woods enhance the intricate plot. Paul Doiron fans will be enthralled. Agent: Gail Hochman, Brandt & Hochman Literary. -

Corbett's ("Frank Yakabuski" series; Mission Road) series starter takes readers to the Maine woods, rife with illegal drugs and human trafficking disguised as legitimate logging. One operation is run with an iron hand by Beau LaFontaine. He makes a deal with a forest products company run by Tucker and Travis Lee to launder the money he makes, enlisting the support of the local banker as well. Alerted by a suspicious wire transfer, the FBI shows up, with undercover cop Danny Barrett as part of the investigating team. Posing as a tree marker, Danny infiltrates the logging company, but when the Lees' banker is executed by an unknown gunman, the investigation unravels with frightening speed. Corbett creates an exciting and tragic story, building compelling characters and examining the intricacies of human relationships. Narrators Adam Gold and Catherine Ho deliver the story with intensity and pathos. VERDICT Readers of crime fiction will enjoy this book. A great next-read for fans of Paul Doiron, C.J. Box, and Nevada Barr.--Joanna M. Burkhardt
