From acclaimed author K. Ancrum comes a queer romantic thriller in which the lives of Hollis, a boy in search of meaning, and Walt, a spirit with unfinished business, collide when Walt takes possession of Hollis's body...and maybe his heart. For fans of Adam Silvera and Aiden Thomas!

Hollis Brown is stuck. Born to a blue-collar American Dream, Hollis lives in a rotting small town where no one can afford to leave. Hollis's only bright spots are his two best friends, cool girls Annie and Yulia, and the thrill of fighting his classmates.

As if his circumstances couldn't get worse, a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger named Walt results in a frightening trap. After unknowingly making a deal at the crossroads, Hollis finds himself losing control of his body and mind, falling victim to possession. Walt, the ghost making a home inside him, has a deep and violent history rooted in the town Hollis grew up in and he has unfinished business to take care of.

As Walt and Hollis begin working together to put Walt's spirit to rest, an unspeakable bond forms between them, and the boys begin falling for one another in unexpected ways. But it's only a matter of time before Hollis's best friends begin to notice that something about Hollis isn't quite...right.

With the threat of a long-overdue exorcism looming before them, will Walt and Hollis be able to protect their love and undo the curse that turned their town from a garden of possibility into a place where dreams go to die?

A boy falls in love with the ghost that's possessing him. Lonely high school senior Hollis Brown feels trapped. He has two close friends, Annie Watanabe and Yulia Ambibola, but his rural town is similar to many others--a dark, forgotten American dreamscape, devoid of industry and government investment. No one can afford to leave, but staying is slowly killing them. Hollis anticipates factory or construction work will be in his future, but near the woods he meets Walt, a strange teenage boy, who like Hollis presents white. In exchange for food and shelter, Walt will help Hollis get his life on track. Walt possesses Hollis' body but allows him space inside their shared mind. Some of the small changes Walt makes do indeed make Hollis's life better, but it quickly becomes clear that Walt has violent secrets and unfinished business. Nevertheless, the two fall for each other and begin to work to free Walt. But as their bond grows stronger, Hollis' friends become suspicious of his strangely distracted behavior and "weirdly happy" mood, and the pair must figure out how to preserve their relationship. Ancrum's tight writing style is perfect for this gritty thriller: simultaneously clipped and lyrical. Both boys are flawed and broken, but their caring connection for each other and themselves is beautiful. The novel's rich tenderness for the town, its residents, and their ghosts makes it a must-read. Queer resilience at its finest. (recipe resources)(Romantic thriller. 14-18)

Grades 9-12 *Starred Review* Between regular beatings from classmates and falling in love with the restless spirit possessing his body, Hollis is having a rough senior year--although, in all fairness, being possessed has mostly improved things. Walt, the twentieth-century boy currently piloting Hollis' body, turns the surly teen into such a neat, considerate young man that Hollis' only friends are sure drugs are involved. As the duo grow closer, their darkest truths come to light, and Walt's may be the key to improving their shared hometown. Walt and Hollis' romance is as intense, stark, and heartfelt as the romances in Ancrum's previous works, despite facing more logistical difficulties due to their shared body. Also consistent with Ancrum's style, the prose and pacing of the book are flawless, willing to unapologetically drag the reader through every possible emotion before providing closure. While both Hollis and Walt are initially immensely unlikable, their growth as people is both genuine and rewarding to watch. Food is significant; Hollis' primary expression of affection is through baking, and recipes presented between key chapters serve to remind the reader of the characters' humanity. Notably, although Hollis is queer and lives in a small and economically starved town, there is never a question of him abandoning it--rather, the beauty of small-town life is highlighted, and the conclusion promises a bright future for the town.
