所记皆明末遗事。上卷起万历讫天启四年。下卷起天启五年讫崇祯二年。如妖书，梃击、红丸、移宫三案，以及魏忠贤乱政，崇祯钦定逆案之类，靡不详载。《自序》谓首纪国本，着门户之所由始也。终以逆案，着贞佞之所由判也。名曰《先拨志始》，所谓辨之于早也。又别一抄本，后附《逆案》十九页。有《跋》云：《钦定逆案》一册，与《先拨志始》微异，得之石惠珍家，而石则得之冯涿州家。有刻本，因录于馆中。又附《东林列传》十页，乃江阴陈鼎所编。又附《魏忠贤建祠》二页。此三种皆非秉书，不知何人汇附于卷末也。
