本书为北岳文艺出版社所刊印的《美国散文精选》（1989）的重印本。重印的目的出于以下考虑据我们所知，该书自发行以来即深受国内外(包括港台地区)读者的广泛欢迎，但由于当年印数过少，且又迄未重印，目前书市久已绝迹，致使购书者每每废然而返。有鉴于此，我社决定重刊此书以满足广大读者的要求，并使此优秀译本得以再获新生。至于此书特色，我们认为至少有五：一，书中所介绍的篇什均为美国自建国以来最具代表性的作品，故可读性较强，其中不少且属于第一次译出；二，译文特重视各原作者风格的传达与再现；三，译笔堪称审慎精练，隽美考究；四，注释亦颇认真负责，剀切详明；五，书前导言与各篇篇首的风格解析对美国散文发展的源流、趋向与各家风格的特点等均有较扼要的说明，从中不难窥见该国散文自成长至全盛的一个总的发展轨迹与概貌。(This book is the reprint of A Treasury of American Essays (1989) published by Beiyue Literature & Art Publishing House. It is reprinted for the purpose of following considerations: As far as we know, the book has been well received by domestic and foreign (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) readers since the publication. However, since the impression of the book is very small and it hadn't been reprinted then, it has been extinct on the book market at present. Therefore, the buyers cannot buy it. To this end, our publishing house decided to reprint this book to meet the requirements of the readers and make this excellent translation to be reborn. We think the book has at least five characteristics: I. The articles introduced in the book are the most representative works of the United States since it foundation with strong readability and many of them are translated for the first time; II. The translations pay special attention to the transmission and reproduction of the style of the original author; III. The quality and style of the translations are prudent, concise, elegant and beautiful; IV. The annotations are also quite serious, responsible, true and clear; V. The introduction in the front of the book and the style analysis at the beginning of each article make brief description for the source, course and trend of American prose development, the style characteristics of each writer and other aspects. It is not difficult to see the general development path and overview of American prose from growing period to flourishing period.)
