Tang Sanzang (唐僧) compassionately rescues a boy who calls himself a child. The boy is actually Red Boy (红孩儿), a young demon in disguise. Sun Wukong (孙悟空) quickly suspects the trick. He plans to throw the demon away when the chance comes. The boy leaps onto Wukong's back and secretly casts a spell. He inhales the surrounding air and his belly swells. Wukong struggles under the sudden burden. In anger he smashes what he thinks is the child. The fallen form proves only a decoy. The true Red Boy transforms into a red whirlwind and carries Tang Sanzang away. Zhu Bajie (猪八戒) and Sha Wujing (沙和尚) are temporarily confused by the red wind and lose sight of their master. Wukong returns and tells the story. He flies into rage and even threatens to abandon the pilgrimage. His brothers remind him of past mercies and urge unity. They set out together and follow the Dried Pine Ravine (枯松涧) toward the Fire Cloud Cave (火云洞). Local mountain and earth spirits appear and tell of their suffering. They reveal Red Boy's origin as the son of the Bull Demon King (牛魔王) and a Rakshasi. Trained in the Samadhi True Fire (三昧真火) at Fire Mountain (火焰山), he rules the cave and torments the spirits. Wukong claims kinship and tries to persuade the boy to release their master. The appeal fails and combat erupts. Red Boy marshals five small fire carts in a five-element formation and fights with a fiery spear. His Samadhi fire proves terrible. Wukong at one point summons the East Sea and the Dragon King Ao Guang (敖广) at the Crystal Palace (水晶宫) for help. Ao Guang summons his brothers Ao Run (敖闰), Ao Shun (敖顺) and Ao Qin (敖钦). They plan to let Wukong lure Red Boy into breathing fire while the dragons send down rain to quench the blaze and allow capture. The plan backfires. Samadhi fire reacts with ordinary water and intensifies. The downpour fans the flames and the cave front becomes a blazing mountain. Wukong is burned and collapses into the icy ravine. Pigsy and Sandy drag him out and revive him by force. Wukong wakes and asks first about Tang Sanzang. The three resolve to regroup and return to the cave with new strategy.
