During this arc the pilgrims face the fiery menace of Red Boy (红孩儿). Sun Wukong (孙悟空) is gravely burned by the boy's Samadhi fire and nearly dies. Zhu Bajie (猪八戒) massages his acupoints to revive him. Sha Wujing (沙僧) and the others support the wounded. They summon the East Sea Three Dragon Kings (东海三龙王) to send rain. The rain only feeds the blaze and the fire grows fiercer. Wukong instructs Zhu Bajie to go to South Sea Putuo Mountain (普陀山) and request Guanyin (观世音菩萨) for help. Red Boy spies the journey and sets a trap. He disguises himself as Guanyin and creates a flaming halo to deceive visitors. Zhu Bajie bows and keeps his head down as instructed and is lured into Fire Cloud Cave (火云洞). Inside he is bound in a large leather sack and hung as a mock trophy. The child boasts that Tang Sanzang (唐僧) is a rare being and that consuming his flesh will grant longevity. He parades the captive as proof and summons six warriors to fetch his father and secure the feast. The pilgrims are placed in a desperate bind. Wukong repeatedly uses transformations to probe and to rescue. He slips into the cave as a fly and discovers Tang Sanzang hanging and Zhu Bajie imprisoned. He also masquerades as the Bull Demon King (牛魔王) to intercept reinforcements sent by Red Boy. At one point he is exposed and barely escapes. Injured and exhausted, he flies to Mount Putuo and kneels before Guanyin to plead for aid. The bodhisattva refuses crude pledges and arranges a subtler plan. She sends the Dragon Maiden (龙女) with a single lotus petal to ferry Wukong across the sea. She borrows thirty six Tiangang knives (天罡刀) from Li Tianwang (李天王) and shapes them into a lotus platform. She pours water from the Yangzhi jade bottle (羊脂玉净瓶) down like a sea to drown the flames. She commands mountain gods and animals to be moved to high ground to save them. Guanyin dips a willow sprig in the bottle and writes the character mi on Wukong's palm as a charm. Wukong then lures Red Boy out. The boy becomes bewildered and follows the bait to the lotus seat. Confronted by Guanyin's device and the array of knives beneath the platform, Red Boy is finally subdued. The episode resolves by combining clever stratagem, compassion and divine power rather than raw force alone. Tang Sanzang and the pilgrims are rescued and order is restored.
