This Halloween, best friends Cookie and Broccoli revel in funny tricks and sweet treats in this early graphic novel that’s all about the true meaning of bravery and not judging others before you get to know them.
Broccoli’s not a fan of his classmates’ scary pranks, but his best buddy Cookie has an idea—he’ll lend Broccoli his superhero costume, and Super Broccoli won’t be afraid anymore! That is, until the ultimate fright has Broccoli fleeing for the big, scary woods behind their school, where he comes across someone in a Sasquatch costume. (It is just a costume . . . right?) Cookie and Broccoli’s classmates learn an important lesson about scaring others and making assumptions about newcomers (yes, even big, hairy Sasquatches). Fans of early graphic novel series like Pizza and Taco and Narwhal and Jelly will adore this latest Cookie & Broccoli offering, which is chock-full of punny costumes (a garlic dressed like a vampire, anyone?), silly asides from the duo’s good friend Blueberry, and even a fun Halloween-themed activity for readers near the end of the book.

K-Gr 3-Welcome back to the world of the Cookie & Broccoli! It's Halloween Costume Day at school, and Hollywood Cookie and Super Broccoli are in for a day of tricks and treats. Throughout the day, the characters learn why it's not cool to scare people, how to not judge someone by their costume and take the time to get to know them, and how to not be afraid of everything. They even meet "Squatchy," who has a terrific costume-or does he? This newest addition to the early graphic novel series gives readers a story of acceptance and overcoming obstacles, with not only their friends but also within themselves. The book contains three chapters, a section with tips for a safe Halloween, and an epilogue-each of these is an opportunity for conversation. Anthropomorphic food friends give the graphic novel a more comical side that only adds to the storytelling. With "punny" costumes like bacon dressed up as a pig, garlic dressed as a vampire, and tomato as ketchup, readers will enjoy the colorful, easy-to-decipher illustrations throughout. Be prepared for laughter! VERDICT Fans of "Pizza and Taco," "Elephant & Piggie," "Narwhal and Jelly," or any Dav Pilkey books will love this graphic novel.-Katie Loomis
