唐僧师徒一路西行，走到了火焰山地界。
当地人告诉师徒四人，要想灭火焰山的火，得去找铁扇公主借芭蕉扇。
铁扇公主是牛魔王的妻子、红孩儿的母亲。她听说悟空来讨芭蕉扇，坚决不肯借，一扇把悟空扇出五万多里。
悟空不气馁，再次回来借扇子，设计钻进铁扇公主的肚子里，逼她交出了芭蕉扇。
可铁扇公主给的是假芭蕉扇，结果火越扇越旺。悟空又去找牛魔王，碰巧牛魔王出去赴宴。悟空趁机偷来牛魔王的坐骑，变成牛魔王的样子，从铁扇公主那里骗走了真扇子。
牛魔王得知后，变成猪八戒的样子，又从悟空那里把扇子骗了回去。两人大战，众天神都来帮助孙悟空，终于降住了牛魔王。
悟空从铁扇公主那儿拿到芭蕉扇，扇灭了火焰山上的火。师徒四人继续前行。
