PreS-Gr 1-Appealing close-up photographs of tropical animals are the main draw of this introductory series. Short simple sentences convey two or three basic facts on each page: physical characteristics, food, babies, and life spans. Each book also includes a few questions meant to encourage critical thinking. Some of the answers can be inferred from the information given, but others require knowledge that is not provided. For example, in Es un camaleon! readers are told chameleons may lay up to 100 eggs and are then asked why they think chameleons lay so many eggs. Given that predators are not mentioned, it would be difficult for a child to come up with the correct answer. VERDICT The visual appeal of these books accompanied by just enough facts should engage students, despite some flaws.

Grades 1-3 With crisp, clear photos and easy-to-read facts, this eye-catching introduction to chameleons covers parts of the reptile's body, its life cycle, and some of its notable features, such as eyes that can look in two directions at once and a long, sticky tongue for catching insects. Thoughtful questions encourage young children to consider why some of these qualities might be useful. Short, direct sentences will be easily accessible to Spanish speakers, and kids learning the language will pick up some new vocabulary. Bright, colorful backgrounds and large text make the facts stand out, and each accompanying full-color photo provides a close-up view of chameleons in action. Helpful diagrams, a glossary, index, and further reading accompany the text. An excellent introduction to chameleons and a useful addition to Spanish-nonfiction children's collections.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
