The concept of climate change and all of its implications is discussed as part of the What's the Issue series. What's the Issue asks 'what's all the fuss about?' It reviews what is at stake when we think about climate change, with the aim of helping young people to understand this difficult subject and provide them with the tools to inform their own opinions on the issue.

School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-A plethora of climate change topics are presented on one to three double-page spreads. The text on each spread offers one-paragraph snippets of information with headings. Each topic ends with a question or questions asking young students to form conclusions on the highlighted subject. For example, a two-page spread on "Who's Responsible?" features paragraphs with the following headings: "Producers by Country," "Per Capita," "Historical Contributions," and "Carbon Emissions Trading." The section culminates with two questions including, "Will insisting on justice create a global agreement that works?" It does not provide young readers with the necessary information to answer these complicated questions. The last sentence of the opening author's note asks, "Opinions matter, so what will yours be?" While it is true opinions matter, climate change opinions need to be developed with comprehensive scientific knowledge. Climate change deniers and scientists hold different views, but all assessments should be rooted in scientific fact and research. The author's note also suggests that young readers will have heard more about climate change than their parents and grandparents. Back matter includes a glossary, resources, and an index. Vibrant, engaging illustrations make the book visually welcoming. VERDICT Opt for comprehensive climate change books that focus on in-depth information rather than forming personal opinions.-Helen Foster James, University of California at San Diego
