Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller, the first book in a brand-new series.

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn't know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings—not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy's room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon—a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother's place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon, battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal collide in this chilling urban fantasy from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

Protect yourself. What you can't see can hurt you.

Garcia (co-author of the Beautiful Creatures books) begins her first solo YA series, the Legion, with a frenetically paced paranormal thrill ride. Seventeen-year-old Kennedy Waters is the ordinary daughter of an ordinary divorced mother, but that all changes after Kennedy encounters a ghost in a graveyard one night, while looking for her runaway cat. It rapidly becomes apparent that the lives of Kennedy and those close to her are very much in danger. With little reliable background on what’s happening to her or what she is up against, and no one but strangers to fill her in, Kennedy comes across as a shallow bundle of nerves for a substantial portion of the book. That said, the reality she is living is a page-turner: five kids marked for death and on their own, trying to outwit a demon with a grudge. That two of them are gorgeous twin boys goes a long way toward reconciling Kennedy to her new normal. Light romance and excitement for fans of the supernatural (or the show Supernatural, at least). Ages 12–up. Agent: Jodi Reamer, Writers House.

Narrator Candice Accola conveys Kennedy's feelings of bewilderment and isolation as she struggles to learn about a new, dangerous side of her previously happy world. Kennedy's normal life ends when two strange boys reveal that her mother was murdered by a vengeance spirit at a demon's behest. Accola's deliberate pacing and calculated pauses enhance the tension. She'll have listeners on the edges of their seats as Kennedy strives not only to survive the demon that is hell-bent on killing her but also to prove herself to the other members of the "Legion," including the dangerous, damaged boy she cannot seem to abandon.
