以章秋谷為主人公，主要描寫晚清上海青樓之事。作者有意暴露青樓生活的黑暗與醜惡，表達勸誡之意，但書中顯現的道德傾向與價值標準，不免使此書成為"嫖界的指南，花叢的歷史"。本書文筆秀麗清暢，人物對白為當時流行之吳語，運用頗具特色。魯迅稱之為晚清狹邪小說的殿後之作，胡適認為與《海上繁花夢》同為狹邪小說之末流。
