The game is on for two nerds who love to outplay each other . . . even when their hearts are on the line, in this charming and geeky romantic comedy perfect for fans of Olivia Dade and Jen DeLuca.
For Rose Marie Jones, risks are a hard no–except for Game Night. For one precious evening a week, Rose can forget about her demanding boss and her lackluster love life and focus on beating the pants off her friends. But none of them brings out her hyper-competitive side quite like William Ashdern.
Her best friend's half-brother, William is the paragon of a sexy nerd. The tall, dorky, and handsome game designer is Rose's playing nemesis. But when Rose decides to enter a contest with the board game she's secretly invented, there's only one person who can help her win.
Now what has always been a game between Rose and William is getting a lot more serious. And after spending her entire life trying not to lose, Rose might finally be ready to risk it all–and play to win.

Fantasy author Patel (the Selene trilogy) pivots to romance with this heartwarming rom-com. A childhood spent with loving but flighty parents has left nerdy Rose Marie Jones deeply risk averse and eager to follow the life plan she has plotted out on an Excel spreadsheet. When her best friends get engaged, beating her and her boyfriend to the punch, Rose is ecstatic for them but also feels compelled to reevaluate her goals. She quickly realizes she’s stuck in a loveless relationship, fed up with enduring sexual harassment at her workplace, and hates the MBA she’s working on. The only bright spot in her life is a weekly board game night with friends where she and her best friend’s smart, geeky, and annoyingly sexy half brother, game designer William Ashdern, love to antagonize each other. When Rose is given the opportunity to submit a board game she’s been working on in private to a contest, she knows she’ll need William’s help to whip it into shape. Patel keeps things light and sweet throughout this cozy and banter-filled love story. Nerdy references to TTRPGs, Lord of the Rings, and cosplay add to the charm. Fans of Cathy Yardley and Seressia Glass will be pleased.

Rose has a spreadsheet full of life goals that she's attempting to achieve, but things are not currently going to plan. Her love life with her workaholic long-term boyfriend has become lackluster at best, and she's miserable at her job, where she's being sexually harassed by her boss. Her escape and highlight of the week is game night with her friends. Her best friend's roommate, handsome game designer William, joins sometimes and has become Rose's game-playing nemesis. When Rose hears about a board game contest that could lead to her own game being produced, she turns to William for help to refine the concept she's been working on for years. After breaking up with her boyfriend, Rose finds herself in a secret flirtation with William, but neither of them is sure if this is real or just another game they're playing. Some fraught family moments, a few misunderstandings, and the workplace harassment provide serious moments amid the flirtatious romance and Lord of the Rings references. VERDICT Patel (The First King) turns to romance with this charmingly geeky love story that will appeal to readers who appreciate fandoms in their fiction.--Melissa DeWild

Nirvi Shah's narration introduces romance to a gamers' group. Rose juggles her best friend's wedding, her board game prototype, and her obnoxious boss, even as she faithfully attends her weekly game night. Shah's voice sounds appealing and the right age for a young professional. Shah delivers Rose's eye-rolling humor with vocal expression as Rose matches wits with William Ashdern, another gamer, who likes to irritate her. Shah's voices for William and Sean, half brothers, are light and masculine sounding. Rose's friend Neema also has a unique voice. As Rose contemplates her priorities, Shah captures William's supportive presence, as well as their growing attraction. While parts of the narration could use greater inflection, the gaming theme and likable characters will keep listeners' attention. C.A. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine
