Vuol mettere in pratica le sue teorie rivoluzionarie sulla coltivazione delle banane, aiutare il popolo di San Marco a migliorare le sue condizioni di vita.
L'accoglienza che riceve è un po' diversa dal previsto: furfanti, generalissimi e tagliagole di ogni risma sono pronti a derubarlo, strumentalizzarlo, addirittura farlo fuori per ottuse trame di potere.
Armato di candore estremo e di illimitata fiducia nel prossimo, Arthur fa saltare tutti i complotti; quasi senza volerlo ribalta ogni volta la situazione a suo vantaggio, con effetti comici dirompenti.
Un romanzo che fa molto ridere – non per niente Woody Allen ne ha tratto un film memorabile – e regala speranza su quanto possano ancora contare qualità umane in disuso: altruismo, gentilezza e bontà.
