Title details for 中国通史演义 by 石家兴(Shí Jiāxīng) - Available
This volume records a period of intense political and military turmoil. Nishu (尼舒) is driven back to Baishui Lake City (白水湖城) as factional strife spreads. At court Emperor Taizong (太宗) faces both reformers and conspirators. The Crown Prince (太子) grows indulgent, seizes land and recruits followers. Advisors including Yu ZhiNing repeatedly remonstrate. Conspirators such as Hou Junji (侯军级) gather support. Zhang Liang (张亮) reports subversive designs and the court investigates. Facing evidence, the prince is deposed and confined. Loyal ministers are rewarded while many conspirators are punished or executed. Wei Zheng (卫争) exemplifies frank counsel and is mourned when he dies, a poignant contrast to intrigues. On the frontier Taizong marshals forces and personally directs campaigns. Generals like Li Shiji (李师基) and Li Daozong (李道宗) win key victories at Liaodong, Baiyan and Ansi. Ashina Sheer (阿什纳社尔) leads Turkic cavalry in decisive maneuvers. Siege tactics, fires fanned by south winds, and coordinated flank attacks break fortified towns. Many defenders are killed and thousands are taken captive. The court reorganizes border administration, sets up prefectures and entrusts local chieftains with offices to stabilize newly pacified regions. Abroad diplomatic and religious missions proceed. Xuan Zhuang (玄壮) obtains scriptures in distant lands and Wang Xuance (王玄测) conducts a daring western expedition to suppress rebellion. At home strange reports of longevity elixirs and omens unsettle the court. Taizong grows frail after prolonged campaigning and personal losses. He summons trusted ministers including Changsun Wuji (长孙无忌) and delivers final charges. He issues a will to secure succession, entrusts state rituals and the heir, and soon dies. The realm enters mourning and a new sovereign ascends. The volume closes with the consolidation of frontier policy and the heavy costs of war and statecraft made manifest.
