Sun Wukong (孙悟空) learns that his master Tang Sanzang (唐三藏) has been seized by a female demon. He and his companions Zhu Bajie (猪八戒) and Sha Wujing (沙和尚) hurry to the Zhenhai Chanlin Temple (镇海禅林寺) and then pursue the trail into the Black Pine Forest (黑松林). There Wukong questions the local gods and learns the captor belongs to Xian Kong Mountain (陷空山) and its Bottomless Cave (无底洞). The three press on toward the fateful mountain. Along the way Zhu encounters two alluring women and is beaten. Wukong trains him to disguise himself and speak politely so he can learn the cave's entrance. Wukong then slips into the cave as a tiny fly. He finds Tang Sanzang held in a narrow red-lattice cell and proposes a risky ruse. The plan is to let the demon bring the monk out and then free him. The stratagem fails. Wukong erupts into a fierce eagle and scatters the demon's banquet. He flies out to summon help and returns in disguise several times. Ultimately Wukong adopts a different trick. He becomes a red peach and is swallowed by the demon. Inside her belly he torments her until she is forced to release the captive. The rescue succeeds for a time. Later raids continue and the battle grows fiercer. On his third descent Wukong forces his way into the belly of the Golden-Nosed White-Furred Mouse Demon (金鼻白毛老鼠精). He uses a plug of his own transformed hair to compel the creature to open her mouth and spit him out. He emerges with his staff to fight. Zhu and Sha join the fray but Tang Sanzang is again taken and the White Dragon Horse (白龙马) and baggage are carried off. In the cave Wukong discovers an inverted shrine and reads the tablets. They bear the names Li Tianwang (李天王) and Nezha (哪咤三太子). He realizes the demon is of celestial descent. Taking the tablets, he resolves to go to heaven and file a complaint. The episodes highlight the pilgrims' repeated efforts, Wukong's cunning and resolve, and the mixture of violence, trickery and moral purpose in their struggle to recover their master.
