In this book, the first generation is 's the couple Walter Morel and Gertrude. Walter, once vigorous, optimistic and likable, becomes bad-tempered, drunk and violent like a dead-alive person. Gradually, Mrs. Morel's affections shift to her sons. However, after the oldest son William dies in his early age, Morel rediscovers his love for Paul. However, Paul's two girlfriends have different visions of love and he doesn't know what to do. After his mother passes away, Paul decides to leave home and goes to the city. However, Lawrence doesn't tell us what will happen in Paul's life while this ambiguous ending perfectly shows Lawrence's perplexed attitude: What he explores is perplexed both for sexual relationship and for interpersonal relationship.）
