Ursus, a kind hearted wandering performer, adopted him as his son and adopted Dea, a blind girl rescued by Gwynplaine in snow. They wandered everywhere and made a living by performing. Later, due to accidental factors and the requirements of British politics, Gwynplaine was able to regain the title of nobility. However, he refused this dirty gift and would rather go back to his partners; then Dea was seriously ill. After the blind girl died, Gwynplaine was deeply grieved and threw himself overboard.)
