Questa favola de "Le mille e una notte" è il racconto delle circostanze che cambieranno la vita di Abou-Hassan. In seguito alla morte del padre, un ricco mercante di Bagdad, Abou-Hassan riceve in eredità una discreta somma di denaro che sperpererà presto in banchetti conviviali. Rimasto squattrinato, il giovane chiede aiuto ai compagni che fino a quel momento aveva rallegrato, per poi però scoprire che a legarli non era vera amicizia, ma un mero rapporto di convenienza. L'ereditiere decide quindi di iniziare a risparmiare e condividere un solo pasto al giorno con un forestiero proveniente da qualunque angolo del Medio Oriente, che avrebbe ospitato per una sola notte. Ed è proprio alla soglia di questa sua nuova vita che avviene il fortuito incontro con il califfo Haroun-al-Rascid.-
