Grades 3-7 This second installment in the middle-grade anthology series contains even more bite-sized stories of your favorite superheroes, made by some of your favorite children's authors. Readers familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe will instantly recognize most of the stories' protagonists, and a small introductory paragraph opens each new section for those who might not be. Some of the stories revolve around SEL themes, such as how to make friends, but the stronger ones focus on a simple yet action filled premise that ends with a punchline. Highlights include Jarrett J. Krosoczka's hilarious take on Spider-Man and knock-off superhero themed ice cream treats and Judd Winick's simple yet empowering tale of Captain America forgiving a bully from his past who has now grown old. Similar to the first collection, the format of the second volume really benefits from the wide variety of art styles and characters used, which celebrate a wide range of both creativity and diversity, while the six-page story structure ensures the stories are quick and pithy, potentially helping reluctant readers. Another big win.
