      Grades 3-6 Reuben and his dog, Mr. Muffins, are enjoying a pleasant day at the park when an intergalactic spaceship crash-lands and a mysterious being, Lieutenant Cassara, explains that she is on an important interstellar mission to find the cosmic light spirit, who will help her people defeat the evil Hakar empire invading their galaxy. After fighting against the Hakar for decades, the overwhelmed light spirit traveled across the galaxy looking for a worthy successor--and that successor is none other than Mr. Muffins. Kahn and Brooks' playful intergalactic adventure is filled with both comedy and space-battle action made all the more delightful by the cheerful, adorable corgi, who travels on a rainbow beam through space to defeat their enemies. Cartoonish figure designs and a lush, jewel-toned palette perfectly match the story's energy. Lots of banter between Reuben and Lieutenant Cassara adds to the fun, and a heartening message about the importance of supporting a friend--even if that friend is a dog--keeps the story emotionally grounded. Middle-graders looking for the intersection of action-adventure and adorable should look no further.

      Gr 4-6-For anyone who has ever had a homework assignment that they really did not want to finish, Reuben can certainly relate-but his reluctance launches things to new heights with a wild adventure into a battle for the cosmos. Everyone knows that dogs are heroes. In this case, Reuben's corgi, Mr. Muffins, is the champion of light: a superhero imbued with the necessary powers to defend the Voltarian Alliance against the evil Hakar forces. The illustrations are bold, colorful, and will keep readers turning pages as fast as they can to see what happens next. The vivid depictions of alien worlds and space battles are imaginative and engaging. Mr. Muffins is adorable and will win the hearts of readers. The story includes excellent opportunities to analyze character traits such as loyalty and courage, and Mr. Muffins invites readers to explore different story perspectives. An entire unit devoted to examining dogs in literature could be rounded out with Mr. Muffins to highlight the ways in which authors include furry friends in storytelling. VERDICT An incredible tale for sci-fi fans. Purchase also for graphic novel readers and those who love to read about animals.-Darby Wallace
