This book introduces young readers to the life of Michelle Obama, beginning with her childhood in Chicago, Illinois. Readers will become familiar with her strong, intelligent personality as they learn about her years at Princeton University and Harvard Law School, her career as a lawyer and later a community service worker, her marriage to Barack Obama, and her life as a mother to her daughters Malia and Sasha. Details of Mrs. Obama's years as a political wife are also discussed, which include her work on her husband's campaign during the 2008 election and her assent to First Lady. The historic significance of Mrs. Obama as the first African-American First Lady is also highlighted. Full-color photos accompany the easy-to-read text. Extras include a sidebar, a timeline, fun facts, an index, and a glossary. Checkerboard Library is an imprint of ABDO Publishing Company.

Grades 2-4 The avalanche of books about Michelle Obama is just starting, and because they willbecome out-of-date rather quickly, this one smartly focuses on Obamas past. Many already familiar stories are told here: how she grew up in a one-bedroom apartment, made a name for herself as an achiever in school, andmet Barack Obama when she was his mentor at a law firm. Other information may be new to some, includingher participation in demonstrationsaimed at recruiting moreminority students atHarvard. This slim volume in the First Ladies seriesis completelylaudatory, even to the point of ignoring controversies over some of her words on the campaign trail. Still, those looking for an attractive introduction to the new First Lady will find this appealing. Both theblack-and-white and color photographs engage readers (the final one is of Obama holding the Bible while her husband takes the oath of office), while the fast facts at the conclusion (shes 511!)add spark.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)

This book provides an introduction to the life of the First Lady. The bland text sounds condescending at times ("She gave many speeches she had written herself. She even delivered them without looking at any notes!"), and the dull, posed photographs of the Obama family on and off the campaign trail contribute nothing new. Timeline. Glos., ind.
