Onscreen, they’re in love. Offscreen, they can’t stand each other. From the author of How to Fake It in Hollywood comes “a sexy lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romance that smolders then bursts into flames” (Abby Jimenez, New York Times bestselling author of Part of Your World).
“Wilder takes readers behind the scenes of a television shoot in this fun contemporary romance. . . . Fans of Emily Henry and Christina Lauren should check this out.”—Publishers Weekly

A POPSUGAR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

Lilah Hunter and Shane McCarthy are madly in love—at least, their characters are. As the stars of the hit paranormal TV show Intangible, Lilah and Shane spent years pining for each other onscreen . . . until Lilah ditched the show at the end of season five in hopes of becoming a movie star. With no such luck, she’s back to film the much-hyped ninth and final season, in which Lilah and Shane’s characters will get together at last.
But coming back means facing one of the biggest reasons she left: Shane. Ever since their secret behind-the-scenes fling imploded at the end of season one, the two of them have despised each other.
Now reunited on set for the first time in years—with the world’s eyes on them and their post-show careers on the line—they’ll have to grit their teeth and play nice. But under pressure to give Intangible’s fans the happy ending they’ve been waiting for, Lilah and Shane are forced to get closer than ever. And if they’re not careful, they might just get blindsided by one final twist: a real-life happy ending of their own.

Wilder (How to Fake It in Hollywood) takes readers behind the scenes of a television shoot in this fun contemporary romance. Lilah Hunter and Shane McCarthy were both unknowns when cast in the paranormal soap Intangible, but their powerful on-screen chemistry made them overnight sensations—and led to a secret fling that ended in disaster. After their breakup, working together was a nightmare, and their constant sniping pushed Lilah to quit the show after season five. Unfortunately, Lilah’s career hasn’t taken off the way she hoped since leaving Intangible, which also suffered without her, so she allows herself to be lured back to boost ratings for the ninth and final season, even if it does mean reuniting with Shane. On set, it’s immediately clear that these sparring hearts are still wildly attracted to each other—but with insecurities and bitterness on both sides, is their relationship doomed to fail yet again? Though Lilah comes across as a bit of a diva at first, readers will warm up to her, and Shane is extremely easy to root for. Fans of Emily Henry and Christina Lauren should check this out. Narrators Kristen DiMercurio and Jay Aaseng create the perfect amount of angst, longing, and tension in this enemies-to-lovers romance. Actors Lilah Hunter and Shane McCarthy are madly in love onscreen in their hit television show, "Intangible." However, offscreen, they can't stand each other. Lilah left the show in the fifth season and has now returned for the ninth and final season. DiMercurio's transitions from character to character flow smoothly, and she delivers an endearing Southern drawl for Shane's dialogue. Aaseng gives a likable performance, but at times he fails to reciprocate the energy that DiMercurio brings. Listeners will root for this couple in the spotlight to finally find their own happily-ever-after. J.J.M. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Kristen DiMercurio and Jay Aaseng narrate Wilder's (How To Fake It in Hollywood) second-chance, enemies-to-lovers romance set under the bright lights of Hollywood. Lilah and Shane's spark is instant--and strong enough to land them leading roles on a paranormal TV series. Soon the two are secretly sleeping together, but they can barely stand to be around each other when the relationship implodes. Lilah leaves the show when her contract is up, only returning for the show's final season, at which point the duo must reconcile their past relationship before their animosity tears the production apart. DiMercurio offers an expressive, entertaining performance of Lilah's point of view. She seamlessly differentiates among secondary characters, providing them with voices that reflect their personalities. Her rendition of Shane's Oklahoman drawl and seemingly affable demeanor further engages. For his part, Aaseng ably captures Shane's internal struggle with his future and keeps the story moving with nimble pacing. However, his women's voices are a weak spot, especially when compared to DiMercurio's range. VERDICT Though an agreeable production, the somewhat uneven performances make this a secondary purchase for most collections.--Amanda L. S. Murphy
